of the michigan coalition for responsible gun owners. mark, i will start with you. you heard from the nra a real focus not so much on guns, really talking about mental illness. they talked about tracking people who are mentally ill and pretty much everything, not about taking away guns but adding more guns. what did you make of their news conference today? >> you know, as somebody who's watched the organization for a while, my dad was a licensed gun dealer in colorado, i know a lot of nra members, it was a really surprising performance. the nra is usually quite smart. then again, they've never been under pressure like this. the truth is, it struck me as incoherent and bordering on detached from reality. talking about things lapierre gets paid a lot of money to talk about on a regular basis. it was not the time to say things even nra members don't believe. i think it is important as we have this debate that nra members are not the washington leadership. they're two very different things. nra members want commonsense gun laws. the washington leadership fights very hard against them. you're going t
here. >> reporter: the boy's dad, tom lamb, and stepmom nicole invited all of northeast michigan to launch these chinese lanterns. >> send them off, everybody. >> reporter: to celebrate what would have been their son's 9th birthday. >> i miss him so much. >> i know. >> so hard. i just want him back. [ crying ] >> we love you, jayden! >> reporter: much of what so many people loved about jayden lamb can be seen in this home video. although he had a rare form of cancer that attacked his central nervous system, here he is lip-synching a silly christmas song, busting a move right after a chemo treatment. the kid had that kind of spirit. but it was his final words, all his own, that will forever stick with his father. >> he looked at me right in the eye and he said, "i'm never going to get married, daddy." my heart sunk when he said that. i'm like, "why would you say that, buddy?" and he said, "god needs me more." >> reporter: "god needs me more," his last full sentence, but the beginning of something truly remarkable. a couple of days after jayden died, tom and nicole were in line to
in the dark. a light dusting of snow also fell overnight adding to the cold conditions. >>> in michigan a winter storm caused havoc on the roads, crashes were reported all effort detroit area including several that involved police cars. more than 19 inches of snow fell in some parts of michigan thursday and friday knocking out power to at least 142,000 homes and businesses. >> in wisconsin, green bay packer fans grabbed shovels to help clean up the field after a major snowstorm there. more than a foot of snow needed to be cleared. for years they have asked fans to come help shovel during massive blizzards. yesterday some lined up for more than four hours before the project was scheduled to start. those who did get a shovel got paid ten dollars an hour. >> without these people helping we couldn't dot. we have 650 people right now. we have 13 people on our staff just supervisorring it. we are moving a lot of snow. we couldn't do it without the public. >> and because of the fan effort the field is ready to go for tomorrow's game when the packers host the titans. >> hopefully they get t
michigan that you saw sent cnn a video he made where he cuts up his nra card. don? >> listen, about putting armed guards in school. that has been proposed before. so it's nothing new. and it's good at least they tried to do something. but they took no personal responsibility. and no intro aspects at all. it was disgusting to most americans. is there any evidence at all that putting armed guards in school will protect children? >> i mean, there just doesn't seem to be any evidence of it. certainly senator bloumenthal doesn't think so and we didn't get a chance to ask questions of the nra, because they didn't take questions from reporters. plenty of parents would not be comfortable with certainly having more guns in schools. for example, in the shooting at columbine high in 1999, don, you'll remember, there was an armed guard at the school, and 13 people died. now, still, there are plenty of gun rights supporters who think the nra's proposal will make schools safer and that gun control is not the answer. >> susan candiotti, thank you very much. >>> lots more on gun control. at 10:00, i'll tal

unemployment benefits would expire. back to the phones. jim from michigan on our line for democrats. how are you? caller: i am great. how are you. host: where is your city? caller: it is near south bend, indiana near where notre dame is. i have a comment on your previous caller first. one of the impressions one could get with the way he talked to obama is like our spending started with obama -- out of control spending. that was in place with bush. obama inherited it. with our wars in iraq and afghanistan. i am believe that it seems like we have notes choice but to let the fiscal cliff happen because there is no way that we have no choice but to let the fiscal cliff -- there is no way but to let the fiscal cliff happen. guest: that is a popular notion, particularly among republicans. they are not liking the defense cuts. there is a growing sentiment among some of them that if you go over the cliff, you will get actual real $2 dollars in spending cuts. some of them are eager about that. it is not necessarily public thing right now. they are talking to each other and saying, is this the wor
